Bishop Stopford School in Kettering
It's not just primary schools that have problems with congestion. Bishop Stopford School in Kettering takes students in Years 7 to 13 from a wide catchment area, so inevitably many of them have to travel to school by car. But now positive steps are being taken to allay concerns over parking and to minimise potential danger for pedestrians.
Drivers are being encouraged to drop students at nearby Glebe Avenue, from where there is a safe, two-minute work to school. The students reap the health and social benefits of walking and stress for drivers is alleviated.
Head teacher Mrs Holman says, 'It's early days, but initial results are promising. If this voluntary "exclusion zone" is successful, we will investigate other safe walking routes and establish a more formal Park and Stride scheme.'
