Award for Safe Kids Walking and BrightKidz
Alison Holland, founder of Safe Kids Walking and BrightKidz, has won the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community in the 2004 handbag.com Barclays Business Plan Awards. Nigel Griffiths MP, Minister for Small Business Enterprise presented her with the award at a special ceremony in London.
Alison’s winning business plan is for Safe Kids Walking – a not-for-profit social enterprise that develops and sells a range of stylish safety clothing and accessories for children. Alison noticed a gap in the market after realising that existing high visibility clothing for kids was not available on the high street and only designed in industrial styles and limited colours.
The BrightKidz range has been developed with walk to school schemes and cyclists in mind. The products are available in a range of colours, have a logo badge and practical elements that make them suitable for and attractive to children. Alison said, 'I am flattered that I have won an award for outstanding contribution to the community. I love what I do and to be recognised in this way means a lot to me.'
Commenting on the awards, Alicen Stenner, Brand Director of handbag.com, said, 'The quality and number of business plan entries in our awards was truly inspirational and shows the impact that women are making and set to make in the UK business market. Alison Holland’s business plan for Safe Kids Walking clearly shows her dedication to safety for children and demonstrates a real community spirit. We are pleased she has received this recognition for her contribution to the community.'
Louise Fowler, Marketing Director of Barclays Small Business Banking and panel judge, added. 'Female entrepreneurs are making a major impact in the UK, contributing to wealth, job creation and the community, and this is demonstrated by Alison’s business. We are looking forward to supporting her using our expertise to help her grow.'
This year’s judges included representatives from handbag.com, Barclays and Business Link, as well as Sahar Hashemi, co-founder of Coffee Republic, Nicola Gewirtz, founder of Lola Rose, and George Derbyshire, CEO of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies.
