International Walk to School Week
The UK Autumn National Walk to School Week took place on 4 - 8 October 2004. This was also International Walk to School Week.
The UK campaign was organised by TravelWise and Living Streets. Jo Pike, campaign co-ordinator says: “Walking your child to and from school on a regular basis, really is giving them ‘star treatment’.”
Pupils at St Francis CE Primary and Nursery School, Bournville, Birmingham and Sudbury Primary School, London Borough of Brent, were given ‘star’ treatment when they walked to school on a red carpet on Monday 4 October.
There were many other initiatives across the UK to mark the event.
Conwy pupils collected old shoes to send out to developing countries where they can be repaired and reused by locals.
Buckinghamshire County Council brought a theatre show “What if it rains?” to schools, highlighting the benefits of walking whatever the weather.
Pupils in Epsom, Surrey walked to school carrying international flags to show their support for International Walk to School Week.
Next years walk to school week dates have been set for 23-27 May 2005 and 3-7 October 2005.
