Police Checks

Police checks (Criminal Records Bureau, enhanced disclosures) are essential for all volunteers who accompany children without the children’s own parents or carers being present. Applications should be made through the school. As these are for voluntary positions the school may not have to pay. Volunteers who are already police-checked through other organisations they are still with may not have to be police-checked again. Please check with your LEA’s Personnel Department through your school’s secretary to see if this applies to your area. If a separate check is not required volunteers need to show their original disclosure certificate to the school.

A further advantage of Walking Bus schemes is that the school’s stock of police-checked parents increases so more parents could be available to help in school and on school trips. Please note that police checks can take several weeks, depending on the time of year, so the sooner you apply for them the better.
